Ive now bought and read a few of these books and they are a perfect companion to the serious listener and all fans in general. We all know that experiences are multi-dimensional. Eating food, drinking, wine or listening to music can be just those things in themselves but when we consider things in a few different ways the experience is truly unlocked to us. For me, listening to music is elevated to a new level if I understand the history, context and landscape of what’s going on. These books enhance your listening experience and help you arrive at a new understanding of your favourite songs and albums. The way the author articulates his own experience and understanding is infectious and adds a new joy. It’s like listening with brain amplification! Marvelous!! Highly recommended.
Released in 1969, “Two” saw the band pushing the boundaries of rock music to almost unimaginable heights. The series of “listening Notes” books act as aide-memoire to our thoughts that may have become clouded over time. More than that, however, these books help you to rediscover favourite albums in a way that no 10-page feature in the monthly music press can ever hope to achieve. Although this album has been re-released in numerous formats, this book concentrates on just the nine original tracks. The forensic detail dissecting each track is never to intense and the love of the music shines through, although I still wanted to hurry through Bonham’s “Moby Dick”! The act of listening to the music with a crib sheet at hand really works and encourages the listener to rediscover all those wonderful bits on the album that, through familiarity, may have been forgotten. Fills the void if listening online, when you own album whether it be cd or vinyl you have the liner notes to read and artwork and concept to appreciate. These listening notes let you Into the album track by track. Gives the music more meaning.
I've always loved this album but wanted to delve a bit deeper into the background and meaning behind some of the tracks. Reading this book whilst listening to the album really helped me to look at the album in a new light.. Will definitely be looking to check out some of the other material. 5*****
